1946 to Present Day
A Family Business committed to excellence since 1946
The business started when Edward Cooke, aged 22 was demobbed from the Navy after the Second World War in 1946.
With prize money in his pocket, he started the Fireside Mobile Library in the heart of Birmingham. Due to post war demand the business soon expanded into supplying soft furnishings, carpets and then furniture. In the late 60’s Edward, known as Ted, was joined by his son Graham and bought an old Post Office in Jockey Road, Sutton Coldfield. Together they sold fitted carpets and furniture and the business became Cooke & Son Furniture Ltd.
By the end of the 70’s they had outgrown the Jockey Road premises and started looking for a new showroom, buying the Old Stone’s laundry on a three acre site in Goosemoor Lane, from the Co-Op. the rundown 12,000 sq ft building was transformed in just three months and opened its doors for business on 22nd June 1982. A series of extensions has seen the premises grow to over 85,000 sq ft, one of the largest independent furniture retailers in the UK.
In 1993 a sister store was opened in Christchurch, Dorset. Over 20,000 sq ft of showroom display encompassing four departments; Connoisseurs, Traditional Classics, Modern and Bedding. This coincided with the companies’ change of name from Cooke and Son Furniture Ltd. to Cookes Furniture Ltd.
A landmark in Cooke’s history was winning the ‘Retailer of the Year’ award in 1997 whilst celebrating their 50th Anniversary Year.
The Cookes team now numbers around one hundred, with many members being with the family for over 20 years. It is the longevity of this core team that provides an invaluable strength in the running of the business. They are literally an extension of the Cooke family. Graham is the Managing Director, Michelle Merchandising Director, Vanessa is Marketing Director and Jennifer Executive Manager. All three daughters graduated from University with BA Hons Business Degrees. Michelle’s husband, James is the Operations Director and Jennifer’s partner Andrew runs the After Sales Department.
