Types of Bed

There are many different types of beds available but they generally come under two styles, a divan bed or a bedframe. It's best to decide which style is most suitable for your needs, so to undertand that, you need to consider the following few points.

What room is the new bed for?

Is it for a Master Bedroom, a Guest Room or Children's Bedroom?

Do you want to make a statement with a large bed?

What is the size of your room and what is the largest bed you could fit in?

What style would suit your bedroom, a traditional or more contemporary bed?

Do you need any storage? Do you want matching bedroom furniture?

Do you want a separate headboard?

There is so much choice but you can easily start to narrow down your selection when you have considered the above quesions.

Create a Focal Point

Buying a bed for a Master Bedroom often means the bed needs to become the focal point of the room and make a statement. Upholstered bedframes or Divans with matching headboard and bases are a great choice for this.

Ideally, you always want the biggest bed you can fit in a room, this offers the most comfort and the best night's sleep.

However, for some rooms, this will take over valuable space for storage and in children's bedrooms playing area. A single divan base with storage options or single bedframe is advisable for a child's bedroom.

Double beds are great for spare rooms or older children, as they can offer a good night's sleep for guests and young adults but also do not take over the bedroom, so other items of furniture can be added.

Bed Sizes

Bed sizes can vary depending on the style of the divan base or bedframe. The below is a guide to mattress sizes.

Single mattress is 90cm wide and 190 cm long, 3' wide and 6'3" long

Double mattress is 135cm wide and 190cm long, 4'6" wide and 6'3" long

King mattress is 150cm wide and 200cm long, 5' wide and 6'6" long

Super King mattress is 180cm wide and 200cm long, 6' wide and 6'6" long

Storage Options

Storage options really are useful to include when purchasing a new divan base and can provide a very practical solution to your home, without compromising on comfort and support. Divan beds typically offer under storage drawers or ottoman style bases that can be lifted from either the bottom of the bed or side, these can even be powered to take the hard work out of lifting the mattress.

Style of Bed

We have a huge selection of beds online and in our showrooms. From contemporary, high gloss to plush velvet beds. We offer painted, wooden and metal beframes. Explore our collections.

 Weigh up your options

Consider whether you’d prefer just a headboard, or a complete bed frame. There are pros and cons to both. If you opt for headboard only you can update it later without having to change your bedstead. If you buy an upholstered bedstead the sides and foot of the bed base will co-ordinate with the headboard.

Tip: Bring in swatches of your wallpaper or curtain fabric to help choose the right colour. With a headboard only, you can team it with a nice divan and mattress and have the headboard either fitted to the bed base, or for a larger, statement style headboard, fitted to the wall on battens. This gives you plenty of flexibility on colours and fabric style, so you can create the perfect look for your home.

Bedframes

With a metal or wooden bedframe, consider whether the base has sprung slats or not as this will work better with some mattress types than others and will effect the tension of the mattress. For your children’s room, consider single beds with a second guest bed underneath which can pull out for sleep-overs.

Matching Furniture

Many of our bedframes also have matching bedroom furniture, including wardobes, chest of drawers, bedside cabinets and tables, dressing tables, stools and mirrors. We also offer a free design service for our fitted look bedframe and wardrobe systems.

Working from Home

If you’re working from home and your spare bedroom also doubles as an office, how about buying a sofa bed so the room feels more comfortable and less ‘bedroom-y’ but will provide occasional guests with a comfy place to rest?

 Popular trends and styles

Big, upholstered beds, especially in velvet, linen, or check fabrics are a very popular and stylish option.
