7 Ways to Elevate Your Home With Black Accents

There’s a rule in interior design wisdom which states that every room should have some black in it. Of course rules can be bent and broken, but we’re here to show you how black can really elevate your home’s interior.
Black is a visual palate cleanser, a punctuation mark, and adds depth, interest and sophistication.
So whether you’re open to black sprinkled in small doses as an accent, or you love the idea of
large swathes of black in your home, we’re here to inspire you.

1. Black and white overall scheme

You really can’t get any more classic, or make more of a statement than going completely black and white. Perfect for the house proud but not ideal if you have small children (all those brightly coloured toys will ruin the look!)

All you need to soften this look are metallic accents, and touches of greenery.

2. Window or door frames can look stunning in black

Crittal glass frames have had a huge resurgence in recent years, becoming almost ubiquitous for home extensions and renovations. If you’re not in the market for new metal window frames, you can paint your internal door architraves, team this with black skirting, and you can optionally paint your window frames or opt for plain white.

And don’t feel left our if you have UPVC windows, you can paint these to quite stunning effect, with specialist paint, and save a fortune on new windows.

3. Black furniture

Unless you’re going completely black and white, we’d advise using black
furniture in small doses - think side or console tables, frames to table bases or chairs/bar stools.
This is enough to punctuate and ground a scheme, without overwhelming it. Black is a great
contrast for deep rich colours, pastels and anything in between.

4. Black light fittings

Pendants or wall lamps, can create a strong contrast with lighter walls. Opt for a vibrant fabric shade to balance with colour, or clear glass or gold shade. This is great for industrial interiors or to balance soft pastels.

5. Black picture or mirror frames

This is perhaps the easiest and safest way to incorporate
touches of black in your home. Black frames with white mounts are contemporary and crisp and
instantly draw the eye to the artwork.

6. Black ornaments/decorative touches

As with picture frames, this is a way of whispering rather than shouting. A touch of black in an ornament, grouped perhaps with white ornaments is chic and subtle and works well on your sideboard, bookcase or dining table.

7. Black in artwork or cushions

Think of your cushions as artwork. With the warmer terracotta colours and blush pinks, you’ll often find black figurative designs or black or navy piping. You probably won’t need solid black cushions, unless you’ve gone for the black and white look throughout, but in a neutral scheme, a small touch of black as an accent will work wonders to liven up your scheme, adding depth and interest.
