Small space, big ideas

Small rooms and awkwardly sized spaces around your house can cause the trickiest of design dilemmas.

It’s easy for a small room to become cramped and cluttered but small can be just as beautiful if you don’t spare on style or efficiency.

If you’re struggling for inspiration to decorate a small room in your house, here’s a few clever ways to open up your room and make the most of any tiny space.

Maximise all your space

You don’t need to sacrifice space or style. If you don’t have much floor space, utilise your walls and maximise every inch. Fitting high display shelves will not only provide welcome storage but also creates the illusion of more height in the room. Hanging curtains from the ceiling rather than the top of your window pane will also add some welcome extra height.

Your room may be small but it doesn’t necessarily mean your furniture has to be. You can make a compact room feel much bigger by choosing a few, large statement pieces rather than several small ones. The key is to keep them in proportion with each other, a good sofa choice is the Ercol Consenza Medium Sofa and Armchair.

The power of colour

Take advantage of the power of colour. A fresh palette will make any dark corner into a light and calm space with neutral tones keeping your room looking streamlined. A pure white will make the room feel light and airy but it isn’t always the only answer.

Your aim should always be to create a space that perfectly reflects you regardless of size. Creating a focal wall can work wonders in any space, whether you choose to paint in one colour or use patterned wallpaper. Don’t be afraid of bold colour, a darker colour on one wall can make the wall recede and the room appear larger.

House of mirrors

Add mirrors to reflect light and create the illusion of a bigger space. Try this Module Mirror or Silver Framed Mirror or to cheat the room’s compact proportions, adding a backdrop of mirror-glass panelling to one wall can also make any small space appear bigger and lighter. When choosing other accessories to adorn your small space, avoid big and bold patterns that will take over the space and make it appear cluttered.
